“Hi, this is Michelle – Ms. Davis,
I wanted to talk to you especially about ways you can continue our first-grade momentum over the summer, especially with reading and working on sight words. Sight words are so important in first grade for building fluency. One fun idea is to take one word a day – or one each week – and really dive into it like a detective. See how many times you can find that word in books or out in the environment!
Alphabet practice is another great activity. Come up with playful connections like “A is for Apple” or even silly ones like “A is for Orangutan!” Linking the letter names with familiar or funny items helps kids remember them better when they’re writing. Try “D is for Donut” or whatever excites your child. Helping kids make personal connections to letter sounds is really important.
Writing can be fun and meaningful – try making birthday cards, summer greeting cards, or even writing a letter to a neighbor saying “Happy Summer!” Kids love art, and there are many creative drawing tutorials on YouTube where they can slow down, learn how to see shapes, and draw in different ways. Our class loved drawing themselves and learning all about shapes!
Encourage curiosity in their everyday environment. Have them be little scientists by keeping a science notebook, it’s a fun way to explore and observe the world around them.
For math, look for patterns. Ask them: “How many ways can you make the number 12?” Try things like “13 minus 1,” or “6 plus 6.” You can even do math on the go, look at speed limit signs and road signs to find numbers and patterns.
This summer, just keep extending their learning. Look for all the different ways you can be creative, have fun, and stay connected with each other.”
